One card I would recommend is the International Student Identity Card. I am not sure if you are a student, but it does provide excellent discounts on hostels, transportation and entertainment. They also offer the International Youth Travel Card if you are under 26 and not a student that offers similar benefits as the ISIC card. You can read about them both at this site:

I’m pretty sure you still buy the card at the first hostel you start at. You don’t pick them up before you leave. The Student card, of course, is only good if you are a student.
